Starflower Power: Borage Oil

organic borage for skin benefits

This sweet little starflower is actually a powerhouse herb, known as Borage. Borage oil comes from the seeds of the plant and is an amazing skin savior. You’ll find borage oil in every single one of Gemstone Organic’s face crèmes because we adore its healing benefits. So why is borage so great for your skin?

Some of the most important polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (EFA) for keeping skin healthy are from the omega-6 family, namely gamma linoleic acid (GLA). Out of all the natural sources of GLA’s, borage oil contains up to 3 times more of this vital fatty acid than the others! GLA’s are one of our skins main structural components. Our cell membranes need these EFA’s to act as stabilizers and ‘gate keepers’, protecting our skin from toxins and other irritants while safely allowing nutrients and moisture to be absorbed and stored. GLA’s balance moisture loss and fluidity at the surface of the skin. Reducing water loss and inflammation will drastically improve skin’s appearance and boost its elasticity.

Fatty acids are a crucial part of our diets, but many of us do not get enough of the correct fats from the foods we eat. Beyond that, we are probably eating some foods that actively block the healthy conversion of GLA’s in our systems! Processed foods that contain trans fats will hinder GLA transformation and can cause a deficiency that affects our skin. If we’re not getting enough EFA’s or if our bodies are not processing these acids to their fullest potential, we will start to notice skin that looks dry, flaky, dull and scaly.

Borage oil is high in GLA and is a beautiful ingredient for healthy skin. It also works some miracles on skin disorders. Eczema, psoriasis, stressed and irritated skin will all improve immensely with the help of borage oil. It’s easy to see why we have chosen borage as a staple in all of our healing face crèmes! Add this star-powered herbal oil to your beauty routine to hydrate and heal your skin year round.

Rose Quartz: Universal Stone of Love

I always say rose quartz is an incredibly soft gemstone energetically...but by that I don’t mean less powerful. I think I describe it that way because that’s how it makes me feel. Softer in my heart, in my emotions. Stress and tension are quickly released. It’s an instant opening of my soul into a gentler place, where forgiveness and unconditional love reign as the peaceful queen.

Rose quartz is a pink stone that vibrates to the heart chakra. This of course can attract romantic love into your life, but there are so many kinds of love that we can practice every day in beautiful ways. There is family love, platonic, unconditional, and maybe most importantly self-love. Using rose quartz can help you forgive and love yourself in a deeper sense. It can raise your sense of self-worth and self-esteem. When we love ourselves and find ourselves worthy of love, we send that message out into the universe. By the law of attraction, it’s what we will see in return. I believe that self-love is the best step into experiencing all types of love in your life! Rose Quartz is one of our most popular crèmes because of the wonderfully heart-opening properties of this crystal.

Watch my video to see how rose quartz makes me feel, and tell me about your relationship to this stone of love ~

How to Care for Your Products

Gemstone Organic skincare is unique in so many ways including being 100% organic and just as importantly, being RAW. Raw means that the ingredients are in a natural, unrefined state. The crèmes plant and mineral based ingredients are heated just to their melting point in order to meld them together into their luxurious creamy texture. And these are all whole-food, unadulterated ingredients. We use no derivatives, no synthetics and no preservatives! To be raw means that these are deliciously fresh ingredients made fresh for you to use and for your skin to indulge in the most nutrient-dense state of all these wonderful oils and butters.

Adding preservatives to skincare, just like with food, means that it may last longer on your shelf. It does not mean that the integrity (vitamins, nutrients, life force energy and vibration) of the ingredients will be maintained. After 6 months, any skincare products have lost their vitality whether they are preserved or not. We like to listen to our bodies and to trust our intuition about our personal wellness, and the message that we hear when it comes to our food and our skincare is that fresh is best! And that ‘natural’ preservatives just aren’t for us. We want to pass this on to you through Gemstone Organic, so that you can enjoy the most pure and clean skincare overflowing with raw nourishment for your skin.

That said, there are special ways you can maintain your raw skincare products to keep them fresh and free of impurities. Here are our recommendations:

  •  keep your products out of the sun, heat and damp environments where they could be effected by the weather and humidity
  •  raw crèmes love cool temperatures and can always be refrigerated for added freshness (especially if you’ve purchased more than one or products you  won’t be using right away)
  •  always wash your hands before applying your crème, or use a clean dry utensil instead of your fingers
  •  use your crème right away. Take advantage of the delicious freshness and feed your skin generously, twice daily.

Ways to Start Practicing Self-Love

Being loving, encouraging and supportive of another person usually comes as second nature. We see our love lift them up when they are down and it makes them happier and optimistic about life. And when these people make mistakes we can forgive them. But how many of us forgive ourselves just as easily? Not enough. We tend to hold grudges against ourselves and judge ourselves so harshly that we are stopped in our tracks and paralyzed by our mistakes. This lack of self-love leaves us feeling drained and discouraged, keeping us from succeeding on our journeys to a fulfilling life. If we work at it we can reverse these limiting beliefs. We can retrain ourselves by practicing simple steps towards more self-love. Start with these three easy tips:

#1 Treat Yourself

Have you ever given yourself a hug? It might sound silly but I fully encourage you to try it right now. It feels good to receive love, especially from ourselves. If you’re working hard and looking for a little special treatment, why not give it to yourself? Mindfully buy your favorite treat at the store. Light candles for dinner, even if you’re eating alone. Go out for a massage or if you can’t, give yourself a little neck or foot rub. Show your body and soul that you love yourself completely and treat it with loving care. It will respond positively because when we take care of ourselves, our bodies know we are listening and will work to communicate back to us. Treating ourselves with love will encourage our bodies to function their best and keep us healthy and happy.

#2 Learn to Accept Compliments

Too many of us deflect compliments, and downplay other’s high-held opinions when it comes to our talents, gifts and accomplishments. When someone pays you a compliment, accept it! Don’t devalue yourself by disagreeing. Instead, honor them and honor yourself by graciously accepting their flattery. It will make them feel good and it will start to change your relationship with yourself. There is nothing wrong with agreeing to a positive statement that is made about you. And the more you hear and accept these truths, the better you will think and feel about who you are.

#3 Use Positive Self Talk

Often times we doubt ourselves and even worse, say discouraging things to ourselves in our heads. We can be our own meanest critic and worst enemy. It’s time to flip that around and be our own best cheerleaders! When you hear your inner voice speaking negatively towards you, stop it in its tracks. Even if you may at the time believe the harsh words to be true, don’t allow them to be spoken. Defend yourself knowing that this voice of self-doubt will eventually hold you back from your dreams. Replace works like “I never” and “I can’t” with “I can”, “I will”, “I do”.

Self-love isn’t something that comes easy for most of us. It is however a practice that we can work on and develop, and every little change we make will show dramatic improvement in our lives. Self-love seems to have a ripple effect on us, bringing in more love from others and more easily found joys in life. Practicing self-love is one of the first steps I strongly recommend if you’re on the path to a blissful and abundant life!

End-of-Summer Skin

MY TOP 4 END-OF-SUMMER SKIN CARE TIPS

As we head deeper into August, we all feel summer gently coming to a close. Once the heat starts to wear off and most of the wild summer events have come and gone, it’s a perfect time to take a moment and check in with your skin. Did you get a lot of sun exposure over the last few months? Maybe too much? Is your skin breaking out from the heat and sweat or is it starting to dry up at night now? The change of season is my favorite time to really slow down and be conscious of the shift in the earth, as well as in my body (and skin!). Here are my 4 tips for healthy end-of-summer skin:

 # 1 – ASSESSMENT

This seems so simple but often times we get into routines where we keep treating our skin in the same way without reevaluating it. Remember, our skin is a live organ on our bodies (the largest one at that!) and needs to be assessed often. Don’t just get stuck with what you are used to doing for your skin. Take some time tonight before you go to bed and look at your skin objectively in the mirror. Notice any changes you might be seeing in texture, color, oil production, etc. You might need different products now than what you were using in the beginning of the summer. And while you’re in the mirror, make sure to not bully yourself or your imperfections. In fact, take a moment to thank your skin for keeping your body safe and protected from the outside elements! Then go ahead and show some love by blowing yourself a little kiss ~ xoxo

 #2 – FACIAL STEAMS

If you think of steams and you think moisture, you’re right. But steams are also one of the best ways to deep clean your pores. After cleansing and exfoliating, simmer up some organic herbs for a few minutes. Pour them into a bowl and sit under a towel, letting your face soak in the herbal infusion and sweat out any toxins left there from that muddy camping trip or crazy outdoor concert you went to. For the best results I like to try to steam at least once a week. It’s really relaxing to do right before bed. Steams are one of my favorite routines to practice because they help clear any acne and improve my skin overall, and the results are INSTANT.

#3 – ICE FACIALS

Those hot summer days are fading fast so grab the ice quick! If you’ve never done an ice facial I highly recommend it. It’s easy and costs next to nothing. After cleansing your skin, take an ice cube wrapped in a thin towel and gently massage it over your entire face for a minute or two. It will make your pores appear smaller, ease acne and wrinkles, and promote blood circulation. I like to do these in the morning or before I go somewhere because of the instant brightening effect it has on my skin. For an extra special treatment and sun damaged skin, make an ice cube tray with water and a few drops of organic lavender essential oil. A spa experience can be that simple, and oh so soothing.

#4 – NIGHT CRÉME

Hopefully everyone has still been using a night créme while they sleep…but I do know a lot of women that skip on the moisturizers in the summer, because of the excess heat. Now that things are cooling down, there is no excuse! Make sure you are washing your face nightly and applying an organic crème. Our skin is constantly regenerating and working to heal itself, so it’s really important that we don’t skip on treating it during those extra 8 hours overnight. A lot of times that’s actually when I feel my skin does its best at healing. Choose a hydrating créme with ingredients that are tailored to you. Ruby is my go-to and I wake up with a face that’s glowing and a fire inside me, ready to take on the day.

Stay tuned as the cool fall weather rolls in - I’ll be posting more about keeping your skin healthy during these seasonal changes. Do you have any end of summer tips you’d like to share with us? Comment below!

Ruby and Her Fiery Magic

Leo’s are known to have the biggest personalities in the zodiac chart. Growing up with a boisterous little sister who always manages to be the star of the show, I can easily agree. And just like most of the Leo born babes, the birthstone for July is a bright and bold force in the world of gemstones.

Just like Leo represents the lion (the king of the jungle), ruby has been named “king” and “lord” of the gemstones by ancient cultures. These larger-than-life titles are an insight to ruby’s well-known power and majesty. Legend is that ruby’s brilliant red color comes from an internal flame that can never be extinguished. This fire represents an eternal burning strength that comes from within and is one of the gifts we receive when we use ruby in our life and our skincare.

Every time I hold rubies or use Ruby crème I instantly feel an increase in my chi. Chi is basically our circulating vital energy. It’s the life force that moves through us and connects our mind, body and spirit as one beautiful operating system. It feeds us and gives us life. This is why Ruby is great when you’re feeling dull, or stuck, or stagnant. It boosts your vitality and gives you fire to feed your passions. Just imagine a magical eternal flame burning at the base of your spine (your root chakra). Visualize that warm, red energy flowing up and through you, firing up every chakra and bursting free with white light when it leaves your body at the top of your head (your crown chakra). Using Ruby is a powerful way to naturally increase this chi and when we let this energy flow we become the queens and kings of our own lives!

On a physical level rubies are known to strengthen the heart and blood flow. Increasing your circulation leads to healthy veins and arteries. If you are sensitive to energies you will literally feel your body temperature rise when you use Ruby! Rubies are great for detoxifying the blood and lymphatic system too, which is why we recommend our Ruby crème for clearing up skin conditions, disorders, rashes etc. By cleansing distressed areas of toxins, your skin will clear up much faster than on it’s own. It’s amazing the benefits and medicine we can find within Mother Earth’s gifts like her gemstones.

Leo’s may be the kings of the zodiac but I think we can all learn to feel comfortable wearing the crown every once in a while. Ruby connects your root chakra to your heart chakra so you can feel happy knowing that all that passion and fire is in alignment with your best intentions. Happy Birthday and special blessings to all those naturally fiery Leos out there!! And luckily for the rest of us, that extra dose of energy can be found with the help of the regal ruby.

Stay Glowing,

Apple Cider Vinegar + Skin

Almost everyone has heard about the countless benefits of the all-natural panacea that is apple cider vinegar. But what about for the skin? We were so excited to develop the Sunstone Body Lotion formula with apple cider vinegar because this food-grade and organic ingredient is a total skin saver…

Here are the TOP 3 benefits to using ACV on the skin:

pH Balance

Our skin’s protective layer, also known as the ‘acid mantle’, functions best at a pH of 4.5-5.5. Skin’s pH levels are vital to its health, and when the pH begins to rise we experience symptoms like dehydration, roughness, irritation and flaking. If skin pH continues to rise, bacteria levels increase and skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis are likely to flare. Without a healthy acid mantle, skin is left with no defensive barrier and is susceptible to all kinds of environmental damage.

Everyday our skin is fighting to maintain a healthy pH. Things like sun exposure, our diets, sweating and the use of soap all lower our skin’s pH so the least we can do is to use a product with an acidic base (such as apple cider vinegar as well as hydrosol). This is the best way to prevent depletion of the acid mantle and is one of the secrets to maintaining vibrant, healthy skin.

Bacteria Buster

There is such a thing as good bacteria, but not always on our skin. Bacteria on the skin leads to things like acne, blemishes, rashes, flakes and flare-ups. Luckily, apple cider vinegar can prevent this too. Because of all the beneficial enzymes, acids and the pH of AVC, it’s an effective treatment of bad bacteria on the skin and can help clear up those trouble spots.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, leaving behind bright and beautiful skin. For those of us with sensitive skin, irritations and acne though, physically exfoliating is not always the best option. Apple cider vinegar works as a safe and gentle chemical exfoliator. When diluted properly in a product, the levels of AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) in apple cider vinegar work to stimulate the skin and exfoliate naturally over time. This process works on a cellular level and leaves skin softer, smoother and even reduces fine lines.
